With sincere compassion, we respectfully announce the transition of Mr. Alfred Leon McQueen. A native and resident of Montgomery, AL, Mr. McQueen transitioned on Friday, August 20th, 2021. He was 66. A public visitation will be held from 4-6PM Thursday, August 26th, 2021, from the McComb Honorary Chapel of Jackson Professional Funeral Services. In compliance with government recommendations and J.P.F.S. public safety standards, individuals attending the public visitation are required to wear a mask or face covering at all times while inside the facility. Beginning at 10AM, on Friday, August 27, 2021, Mr. McQueen will lie in repose until 11AM. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11AM on the facility grounds.
Alfred "Leon" McQueen was born on November 1st, 1954, to the late Sarah Nell (McQueen). He passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 20th, 2021 in the comfort of his home.
Alfred accepted Christ at an early age and joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Hunter Station. Later in his life, he became a devoted member of the Kingdom Hall Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
A 1973 graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Alfred received his formal education in the Montgomery Public Schools. Later, he attended John Patterson Technical School in Montgomery, AL, which is now known as Trenholm State Community College. In the 1990's, Alfred started Selma2Montgomery Trail, Inc. to bring awareness to the racial and social injustices and to celebrate the accomplishments of those who fought along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He spent years participating in many civil rights events while motivating, promoting, and sharing facts to others about Montgomery's history. In the words of the late John Lewis, Alfred was not afraid to get into "good trouble," and he courageously fought until the end.
Alfred was a well-known and respected employee at the Alabama Department of Transportation. After 28 years, he happily retired in 2017. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family and friends, to include longtime friends of Carver High School's Class of 1973. Alfred was a fun-loving person with an unforgettable smile.
Alfred "Leon" McQueen is survived by four children: his son, Altuwan "Toot" Hill (Michelle); daughters: Lolita "Shine" Hill (Roland), and Yasmine "Yazzie" McQueen all of Montgomery, AL, and a bonus daughter, Malakia "Lake" Williams (Donika) of Atlanta, GA; a devoted friend: Ms. Pat Powell of Montgomery, AL; ten grandchildren: Myrecia Broaden, Myreico Broaden, Jr, Jacques Hill, Altuwan Hill, Jr., Quinshelle and Arguenetta Fitzpatrick, Jaden and Riley McQueen, Amari and Addisyn Doss; three sisters: Marshetia "Shelia" King, Tangela "Tangie" King, and Brenda Smith all of Montgomery, AL; two brothers: Curtis King of Montgomery, AL, and Larry Jackson of Huntsville, AL; ten aunts, four uncles, and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves special friends to cherish his memories, including the "Bad Boys." Tommy Williams, Daniel Jenkins, Barry Landrum, Jimmy "Jam" Kennedy, and Houston Carr, and one "Bad Girl," Roxie Scott, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Alfred "Leon" McQueen will be greatly missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly.
