With sincere compassion, we respectfully announce the transition of Mr. Charles Griggs, Sr. A native and resident of Montgomery, AL, Mr. Griggs transitioned on Sunday, October 3rd, 2021. He was 67. A public visitation will be held from 11AM-12 (Noon) Friday, October 8th, 2021, from the McComb Honorary Chapel of Jackson Professional Funeral Services. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12(Noon) on the facility grounds. Committal and interment will follow at New Pleasant Valley A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery, Hope Hull, AL. Pastor Eddie Sanford is the officiant. In compliance with government recommendations and J.P.F.S. public safety standards, individuals attending the public visitation are required to wear a mask or face covering at all times while inside the facility.
Charles Griggs, Sr., the fourth child of six children, was born to the late Charlie Freeman and Hattie Mae Griggs-Freeman on September 27, 1954, in Montgomery, Alabama. Eventually, Charles and his entire family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. He was affectionately known to many as Punkin and Chuck.
While living in Birmingham, Charles attended A. G. Gaston Elementary School and Wenonah High School where he excelled in baseball as a catcher. Prior to completing high school, he returned to Montgomery to live with his grandmother (Millie Davis, known to many as Ms. Tang) and continued his education while continuing to play baseball. He was known for his skills at playing baseball. Charles was employed with and retired from Kopper Industries.
Preceding Charles in death are his mother and father; sister, Eula Mae Moore; brothers: Ollis and Willie Griggs; nephew, Cedric Carr; and sister-in-law, Lelia B. Griggs.
Charles was granted eternal rest on October 3, 2021. His life will forever remain in the hearts of his sons: Kalvin (Amy) Stockdale (Robertsdale, AL), Frederick (Naeemah) Davis (Tuscaloosa, AL), Charles, Jr. and Kevin Rhodes (Montgomery, AL; daughters: Ashanti Thomas and Katie Griggs; God-daughter, Devaleri, all of Montgomery; sisters: Cora Ward and Bernice (Ron) Maston (Birmingham, AL); loving aunts: Elnora Davis (Birmingham, AL), Pearlie Griggs, (Montgomery, AL); uncle, Burrell (Odessa) Griggs (Montgomery, AL); special cousins he considered as brothers: Burrell Jr., Nathaniel, Kenny, and Gregory Griggs (Montgomery, AL); brother-in-law, Leroy Moore (Birmingham, AL); 19 grandchildren; a special companion, Patricia Murray; God-sister, Janice (Matthew) Jackson (Birmingham, AL); God-brothers: Don and Michael Gipson (Birmingham, AL), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
