Flora Jo (Balcom) Helems

With sincere compassion, we respectfully announce the transition of Mrs. Flora Jo Balcom-Helems. A native, and resident of Hartford, AL, Mrs. Helems transitioned Sunday, October 30th, 2022. She was 66. Public Visitation will be held Sunday, November 6th, 2022 from 2:30PM until the Homegoing Celebration begins at 3:00PM. This will take place at Prosperity Missionary Baptist Church in Hartford, AL. Pastor Dennis Snell is the Officiant. The Committal will follow the service.

Mrs. Flora Jo Balcom-Helems was born August 7th, 1956 in Hartford, AL to Gussie Pearl Balcom-Johnson.Flora attended Hartford High School. During integration she transferred to Geneva County High School, and graduated with the class of 1975. Mrs. Helems continued her education at George C. Wallace Community College. There she earned a degree in cosmetology. Flora worked in local hair salons and would often work as a hair stylist for various funeral homes in the Wiregrass Area. She eventually became her own boss, opening her own salon behind her home located on 6th Avenue in Hartford. Known for her Jheri Curls & Press and Curls, Flo's Hair Fashion was in full effect for many years until her health declined.

Flora accepted Christ at an early age, and joined Antioch M.B.C. There she served faithfully in the church. She later Joined Prosperity M.B.C.; and attended as often as her health would permit. She was a loving and kind-hearted soul who never met a stranger. She would help anyone that she could without any reservations. Flora loved spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite past-times included going to gospel singings and listening to gospel music. Her earthly presence will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Flora leaves to cherish her memories; two daughters: Kirstie Balcom and Flonece Helems; grandsons: Trey Balcom and Adrin "Scooter" Doster; a granddaughter: Aaliyah Balcom; a brother: George Heard; aunts, one whom she was named after: Flora Owens of Detroit, MI and Betty Balcom; an uncle: Rev. Dennis Threats; a brother-in-law: Ralph Tiller, Sr; nephews: Simeon Johnson, Ralph Tiller, Jr. and Te'jado Tiller; a God-son: Eric Holloway, who followed her career path and is now a Master Cosmetologist; a "special daughter," Lea Ward; her grand-dog, Luna, and a host of special cousins and friends. 

Mrs. Helems was preceded in death by: her mother; grandparents, John and Gussie Balcom; her oldest brother, Larry Balcom; her youngest sister, Melissa Tiller; her husband, James Helems; a "special grandson," Deon Brown; a special friend, Mrs. Ernestine Price; several aunts, uncles and other relatives.
