We respectfully announce the transition of Mr. Gary Eugen Atchison. Mr. Atchison, a native of Bessemer, AL, and resident of Montgomery, AL transitioned Saturday, September 28, 2024. He was 74. The family will announce a memorial service at a later date.
Gary Eugene Atchison, 74, died peacefully at his home in Montgomery, Alabama, on September 28, 2024. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, son of Robbie Dunnavant, Gary grew up in Bessemer, Alabama. The first generation in his family to attend college, he served as the senior class President at the University of Montevallo and went on to proudly run a successful campaign against the “Machine” before graduating from the University of Alabama School of Law.
Gary spent his life working in the courtroom and out in the community on behalf of those who experienced injustice and inequities. He had a deep love of nature, conservation, music and art, and he never met a stranger. He was simultaneously a historian and a futurist in both mind and spirit, and he will be most remembered for his kindness.
He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Nancy Hendrix (Bradley), grandson, Noah, his longtime partner, Pamela Kelley, who cared for him selflessly and lovingly, and many others whose lives he touched along his life’s journey. Donations in his memory can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Montgomery where he proudly experienced a community of faith with others. A celebration of life is being planned and details are forthcoming.
