“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith…” — 2 Timothy 4:7
Deacon James Gregory Pope, Jr., affectionately known to many as “JP”, ”Deacon Pope,” or simply “Paw‑Paw,” was born on January 5, 1963, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late James Pope, Sr. and Georgia Lee Green Pope. From the beginning, James carried the spirit of a lion but also gentle as a lamb, a warm smile, and a natural gift for connecting with people. His life’s journey was one marked by faith, music, family, and service.
James received his education through the Orleans Parish Public School System, where he developed early friendships and discovered the passions that would shape his life. As a teenager, he fell in love with the bass guitar — an instrument that became not just a hobby, but a calling. Alongside his brother Otis, he formed the band Sensation, and the Star Lite that later became M-Paq, the first of many musical ventures that would take him to various local stages. His talent, professionalism, and unmistakable groove made him a sought‑after musician. Over the years, he performed with ELS, Les Gettrich, Sha’on, Tomato, and the Tip Tops. His final performance with the Tip Tops Show Band on December 5, 2025, stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication to music.
In 2002, James experienced one of the most meaningful seasons of his life. He accepted Christ, was baptized, and joined Greater Liberty Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Calvin W. Woods, Jr. That same year, he married the love of his life, Andrea Falls, forming a union built on love, partnership, and unwavering devotion. To their marriage, one son, James G. Pope III, was born. Through Andrea, he also inherited two bonus sons. Family was the heartbeat of his life, and he took pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
James’ service to the Kingdom was sincere and steadfast. He served faithfully as a sound technician, A/V team member, Armorbearer, and ultimately as a Deacon, ordained on May 27, 2018. Whether behind the scenes or standing in support of leadership, James served with humility, excellence, and a heart for God’s people.
Outside of music and ministry, James enjoyed the simple joys that made life rich. He was an avid fisherman, often found near the water with a rod in hand and peace in his spirit. He was also known far and wide for his exceptional cooking — especially his famous seafood gumbo, a dish that brought family and friends together time and time again. A devoted New Orleans Saints fan, James cheered passionately for his team, win or lose. Yet among all his titles, “Paw‑Paw” was the one he cherished most. His grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, and he poured love, wisdom, and laughter into their lives.
On December 19th at 11:45 p.m., James answered the call of his Heavenly Father and transitioned peacefully, with his beloved wife Andrea and his brother Otis by his side. Though his earthly journey has ended, the impact of his life continues in the hearts of all who knew him.
James is preceded in death by his parents, his son James G. Pope III, and his bonus son Derrick J. Harry.
He leaves to honor and cherish his memory: his devoted wife Andrea Falls Pope; grandchildren Adam G. Pope and Ava S. Pope; sister Gwendilyn P. Bellizan (Randy); brother Otis H. Pope (Maria); bonus son Devin J. Harry; daughter‑in‑love Shakari M. Pope; bonus grandchildren Derrick Harry, Jr., Zierr Harry, London Harry, and Prince Harry; nephew Christopher J. Pope; godson Tristan D. Frank; and a host of other relatives, Deacon brothers, musicians, church family, and friends.
James lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and faith. He fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith. Now, he rests in the loving arms of the Lord, receiving the crown of righteousness promised to all who love His appearing.
