Julia’s life’s journey began on January 18, 1941 in Montgomery County, AL in a homestead called Hall’s Quarter. Julia’s dear mother Clara Mae Wilson and devoted grandparents, George Wilson, Sr. and Caroline Wilson, laid the foundation that developed her into the woman that we knew and will continue to love. Like many African American children during that time, Julia received her early education at Goodship Church School and later attended Sandtown High School. On Sunday mornings, Julia attended Goodship Baptist Church with her family. At an early age she accepted Christ and was also baptized there. Julia would often talk about how the old matriarchs of the church would usher in the Holy Spirit with stirring hymns and heartfelt prayers followed by good choir singing and dynamic preaching. Julia’s gift of singing was stirred up at Goodship. She joined the Senior Choir and became a powerful lead singer. For many years, she served God faithfully through worship and with her anointed voice of singing songs of praise unto Him.

Julia married her longtime sweetheart Matthew Jackson on April 15, 1961 and they were blessed with six children. She took on her role as a mother and wife with beauty and resilience. Even while working various domestic, factory and foodservice jobs Julia always made sure her family was nurtured and cared for. She even went above and beyond to help others in her community. Whether it was offering a hot meal or giving a genuine word of encouragement- she always had a special way of making everyone feel accepted and loved. She and her husband Matthew ensured that the home they provided for their children was centered around love for God and love for each other. Thankfully, that legacy passed on to the next generation of grandchildren. Julia Mae loved her grandchildren and great grands. She took the time to love each one in a way that made them feel special. As a grandmother, Julia had something unique that she shared with each one of her grandchildren; and she would often say how proud she was of them. One of the greatest legacies she shared with her children and grandchildren was her gift of cooking. Julia made sure all of them knew what good soul food was. Although, Julia taught them everything she knew about cooking- only her hands could properly prepare her famous Cornbread Dressing!

On March 26, 2024, Julia left her earthly home for her eternal home and passed away peacefully in the company of her loving family. Julia was preceded in death by her mother: Clara Mae Smith; brother: John Lee Smith; sisters: Johnnie Mae Williams, Helen James, and Linda Moore; grandsons: Oranthus Jackson and Ahmad Jackson.

She leaves to cherish her memories; her husband for 63 years: Matthew Jackson; six children: Debra Jackson, Millbrook, AL, Wyman (Sabrina) Jackson, Prattville, AL, Olivia Venable, Elmore, AL, Bonita (Carlton) Owensby, Coosada, AL, Shelia Cooper, Millbrook, AL, and Matthew (Shenika) Jackson, Millbrook, AL; two sisters: Juanita Crawford, Atlanta, GA and Geraldine Abrams, Atlanta, GA; two brothers: Larry (Dora) Smith, Atlanta, GA and Jeffery (Linda) Smith, Atlanta, GA; a devoted sister-in-law: Darian Tymes, Millbrook, AL; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Julia Mae Jackson will be greatly missed. Her remarkable life has left us all with many memories to cherish through our times of bereavement; and her legacy of love and gratitude will inspire us for the rest of our lives.
