Luther Gilbert Obituary

With sincere compassion we respectfully announce the transition of Mr. Luther Johnson Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert, a resident of Montgomery, AL, transitioned Sunday, September 15th, 2024. He was 66.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Luther Johnson Gilbert, 66 of Montgomery, Alabama. A beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, he departed this earth on September 15, 2024, after his heroic battle with cancer. His body had grown tired, and he peacefully surrendered to eternal rest. Luther has left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

He was born August 17, 1958, to Luther Johnson Gilbert of Georgia and Betty Lou Brown of South Carolina. Though born in Virginia, it became clear after traveling that his home was in Alabama.

Luther is survived by his best friend and beloved daughter, Danielle Lawson of Chatham VA; his five cherished and amazing gifts from God, his grandchildren: Blake, Cameron, Gavin, Adaline, and Audrey. Luther also leaves behind his loving siblings: Debbie Gilbert of Vinton, VA, Mary Montgomery of Blue Ridge, VA, Robert Vaden of Roanoke, VA, Teresa Punsalan of Washington, Lori Miller (Troy) of Roanoke, VA, Brian Bush of Vinton, VA, and Bobby Bush of Franklin Co., VA, and a wide circle of friends who became family.

He joined the army in 1979 and was proud to serve his country. Following his service, he was in the transportation industry as a commercial truck driver. Most recently, he was known in his community and those around him for his dedication to service as owner/operator of a towing company and mechanic service.

In accordance with his final wishes, Luther’s request for cremation will be honored. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in his honor to the Montgomery Cancer Center or the Montgomery Humane Society in Montgomery, Alabama.
