With sincere compassion, and empathy; we respectfully announce the transition of a beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. Mr. Robert Lee Holmes (Bob); a native of Galvez, LA, and resident of New Orleans, LA, transitioned on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020. He answered the Masters call with the prayers and love of his son and family encompassing him. Visitation will be held from 9-11 am with Home-going Celebration immediately following on Saturday, September 12th, 2020 at Macedonia Church of Deliverance 17560 Hwy. 933 in Galvez, LA. Interment will be at the Holmes Family Cemetery. In compliance with the directives issued by the local and state health departments, as well as the CDC guidelines, the church administration has mandated that ALL individuals attending the visitation and/or funeral services be REQUIRED to wear a mask or suitable face covering. It must be worn at ALL times while inside of the facility.
Mr. Robert Lee Holmes was born on April 9th, 1950, in Port Vincent, LA to the union of Mr. Walter & Mrs. Helen Ealy Holmes. He was the seventh of sixteen children. On Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020, he answered the Masters call at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, LA.
Robert was baptized at the age of thirteen by Bishop Roman Ealy, and Bishop Johnny Williams at the Church of God in Galvez, LA. There he was an active member until he moved to New Orleans, LA. “Bob” or “Uncle Bob,” as he was affectionately known, attended school in both Livingston and Ascension Parishes. After graduating from Kennedy High School, he attended Camelot College. It was there that he attained his certification as a Medical Assistant. He was married to Constance Dillion Holmes until her death.
Robert began his industrial life working in landscaping and tree service with his father. He also labored as a Dockman. Among his life accomplishments was the honor of attaining a CDL. After this achievement, Robert drove for Greyhound Bus Lines, trucking companies, and medical transportation companies for many years. Later in life he retired from Hotard Tourism and Event Transportation. Although he loved to travel, “Bob” was always excited to see and spend time with his family when he came home. In his last days, he was blessed to share invaluable time with his son.
He leaves to cherish his memories; two devoted children: Mr. Robert Oliver (Carla) of New Orleans, LA; and Ms. Robin Jackson Garrett of Baton Rouge, LA; five sisters: Redina H. Lee of Galvez, LA, Pastor Marie H. Henry (Eddie, Sr.) of Gonzales, LA; Helen H. Watson, Sharon H. Avie (Daniel, Sr.) all of Baton Rouge, LA, and Eunice H. Clay (Charles) of Pace, FL; five brothers: James Holmes (Barbara) of Phenix City, AL, Joseph Lee Holmes (Brenda) of Dallas,TX, Eugene Holmes, Murphy L. Holmes, both of Baton Rouge, LA, and Lindy Paul Holmes of Mobile, AL; seven grandchildren: Kiera Hills, Eric Oliver, Don’te Oliver, DeJuan Ross, Keith Coleman, Jr., Keisha Jackson, and Keionne Coleman; two great-grandchildren: Ky and Kyler Hills; aunts and uncles: Bertha E. Jackson (Freddie, Sr.), John Ealy, Sr. (Lillian), Wanda Ealy, and Walter Montford. He also leaves behind a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by; his parents: Mr. & Mrs. Walter & Helen E. Holmes; two sisters: Albertha H. Anderson & Juanita H. Johnson, three brothers: Walter Holmes, Jr., Walter Holmes, III, and Mark Holmes; paternal grandparents: James Holmes & Tessie Baxter; maternal grandparents: John & Bertha Ealy; several aunts, uncles, three nephews, and three nieces.
