Shirley Jean Jones White was born March 5, 1952, in Montgomery, AL to the late Nancy Lee and Folley Jones. She openly confessed Christ at an early age at the Holiness Temple Church of Christ in Prayer #2 in Montgomery, AL. She later joined her husband, James White, at St. Stephens Baptist Church where she served faithfully as the Youth Director, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, Black History Program Director, District Sunbeam Supervisor and being in the choir. In 2018, they joined Goodship Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, Head of deacon wives, and sang in the choir. Shirley also served as Goodship’s representative with the Montgomery Antioch District Association. She served at Goodship faithfully until God called her home on October 12, 2024.
Shirley believed in the power of education. She attended Alabama State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in English with a minor in Library Science, but she concentrated in Special Education. Shirley had a unique love for children. Wherever she went, she enjoyed working with children. She "Mothered" many of those she came across and always shared her love for Christ with them. Shirley worked at Cloverdale Jr. High School, Floyd Jr. High School and Brewbaker Intermediate. After retiring, she worked with the Montgomery Antioch District Association (MADA), where she served as the Sunbeam Supervisor. Shirley was known as someone that the District could depend on. She worked tirelessly to come up with activities that Sunbeams and Sunbeam advisors all over the District would participate in, as they grew in Christ.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents: Nancy Lee and Folley Jones; brothers: Roosevelt Baldwin Sr, Willie James Baldwin Sr. and Albert Baldwin Jr.; Sister-in laws: Brenda Pollack, Jessie Boler; and a Brother-in-law: General Curtis White. Cherishing her memory and celebrating her life are her devoted husband: James White; daughter: Shayla (Chris) Perry; and a sister: Earnestine Rainer; five grandchildren: Zykeria Renee Nettles, Zharia Jeane Nettles, Zoey Chrisette Perry, Elijah Dwayne Perry and Ava Marie Perry; a sister-in-law: Johnnie Ree King; devoted nieces: Annie (Thomas) Patterson and Mary Ann (Charles) Lee; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to mention; and she loved them all.
